Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of beef cattle do you raise?

Our beef is an Angus cross.

For us, this means the mama is Holstein and the papa is Angus.

This actually gives us genetics of animals that are great at converting their food energy (Holstein) and using it to put on lots of muscle (Angus). This is probably one of the reasons why our steers 'dress out' about 5% higher than industry standards (aka. we get about 5%+ more meat from our Angus cross than is typical for most farmers).

What do you feed your cows? Are they "grass-fed"?

Grass-fed, grass-finished. Organic. Non-GMO.

We are committed to ensuring the best quality beef and we can only do that with the best quality feed.

We use intensive rotational grazing in our pastures from spring to summer. During the winter, the have free reign through the snowy fields, but are fed a balanced ration of mixed forages in the main barn.

Because we raise them side-by-side with our organic dairy herd, we use our crop lab analyses and our professional animal nutritionist to create balanced custom rations. This ensures their nutritional requirements are met all year round - no winter lull - so they can be at peak health all the time!

Do you use antibiotics or hormones on your cattle?

We do not use any artificial hormones on our animals at any stage of development.

With antibiotics, we will ONLY use them as a treatment when absolutely necessary - BUT that animal can no longer stay on our farm because it would violate organic certification. So, they are kept separated until we can sell them to another farm.

Our cows are our business, but they're also our cows - we would never make an animal suffer just because it could affect our certification. We can be humane, and still offer you a clean, wholesome product.

Do you use artificial fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, or fungicides?

Hard NO to all of the above -
we believe that to make healthy beef, we need healthy feed, and healthy crops need healthy soils. Artificial chemicals are killing essential micro-organisms and destroying the organic matter in soils around the world. Regenerative farming practices, like the ones we're using here at Keyser Creek Farms, seek to rebuild the soil in communion with nature's path, and we've seen amazing results!

From the business side of things... all these practices violate the standards of organics, and the principles of regenerative agriculture we use here at Keyser Creek Farms.

Our farm is certified organic according to the standards set forth by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. We are registered and certified by a third party organization called CSI (Centre for Systems Integration) - who also does audits and inspections of our farm.

How are your animals treated?

We spent 7 years touring state-of-the-art barns, and researching the best animal husbandry practices before we finally built our new barn (which was completed in 2021).

Our cows aren't just 'humanely' treated; they are just plain SPOILED!

As a family, we raise our animals to be the happiest cows we can.

It might sound cheesy - but think about it. Unhappy cows don't eat, drink, rest, or exercise... which means they don't make high quality beef or milk. Which means we don't make money.

Taking amazing care of our animals is the best for them, for us, and for you!

How do you treat health issues in your animals?

First, we have seen first hand how prevention is key.

Health issues in our animals have decreased dramatically (over 80%, and that's being conservative) since we became organic.

With proper nutrition, comfortable housing, pasture access, and low stocking density - the stresses that often cause health issues are practically eliminated.

When we do have a health issue - we use naturopathic or homeopathic remedies for our animals. We spent months travelling up to Ottawa learning about homeopathics specifically for cattle, but we've hardly had to use it!

Any other treatment products we might use (like a salve for a sore foot) needs be approved by the organic certification agency. They have a list of approved products, and if we find something new we'd like to try, we have to submit the product information and ingredients list - they will test and verify that it meets organic standards before we're allowed to use it.

Is your farm certified organic?

Yes.

We follow all the standards set by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and are third-party certified by CSI (Centre for Systems Integration).

Where is your farm located?

Our farm is located on Kerwood Rd., just north of the 402 highway (we actually have our own cutoff!).

We are almost exactly half way between London and Sarnia - about 30 minutes to each - and 15 minutes NW of the town of Strathroy.

How long is frozen beef good for?

Our beef is packaged in traditional biodegradable butcher paper which maintains the freshness of the frozen meat for up to one year.

What type of packaging do you use?

We consciously chose to stick with traditional butcher wrap paper rather than vacuum sealed plastic.

Butcher paper is made from kraft pulp and is biodegradable - not just recyclable. This can be added to your compost bin, rather than a recycling box or garbage bag.

Most people don't realize that it maintains freshness of the frozen meat for up to a year! Yes, vacuum sealed lasts longer - but when your farmer is just an order away, why would you want to eat 3-year-old meat?

In terms of shipping materials - everything from our insulated box panel to the gel ice packs is biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable.

It was important for us to ensure that even our shipping process aligns with our values of regenerative farming.

How much freezer space will I need?

A good rule of thumb is that you can fit between 35-40lbs of beef in one cubic foot.

This can vary based on the cut of beef you have - large round roasts don't stack as efficiently as our (amazingly uniform) 1lb ground beef packs.

How long does it take to deliver?

If you have a smaller order, and we have the cuts on hand, we will aim to ship out on the following Monday/Tuesday.

We do this because we don’t want you to be disappointed. It would be incredibly unfortunate for your package of beef to be stuck in transit over a weekend and arrive thawed!

In order to avoid this situation, we only ship at the beginning of the week, and our courier service guarantees 2-3 day shipping.

If you are purchasing a larger side of bulk beef the timeline of processing, hanging, packaging, and shipping is closer to 3-4 weeks.
